What to Wear for Yoga

What to Wear for YogaPracticing yoga can be very relaxing and for some even life changing. However, the wrong clothes can completely ruin the experience. Yoga takes extreme concentration and focus, and involves very controlled movements as well as balance. Clothing that rides up, slips down, bunches, or otherwise does not stay put the way it should, can make focus, concentration, and balance almost impossible. The stretching and reaching involved in yoga is not conducive to keeping clothing in place, therefore yoga apparel must be designed specifically to do what it needs to do, which is stay put so that concentration can be maintained and make sure nothing is revealed that should not be.

Yoga clothing is usually smooth and somewhat clingy. The fibers are often natural, including cotton as well and hemp and bamboo. This time of clothing is eco friendly, especially when of the organic sort. Organic clothing is clothing made of natural fibers that are pesticide free. The light, swingy fabric has just enough cling to keep it in place while allowing it to move with the body. This works well for yoga as it allows for free movement without having to worry about clothes. These types of natural fabrics do a great job of wicking away sweat and moisture so that you feel cool and fresh from beginning to end.

Many styles of yoga apparel are available. Pants for women range from pants to capris, with some fitting snuggly all the way down to the ankle, and others having a slight flair at the bottom. For men, shorts are the more prevalent style of yoga bottoms, but long pants are available. Tops for women can be short or long sleeves tees, tanks of all styles, halters, and sports bra like tops. Most generally offer some sort of breast support so that a separate bra is not needed. This encourages the free movement needed while practicing yoga. For men, often there is no top worn. Men’s yoga t-shirts are available if a shirt is desired though.

Yoga clothing is typically extremely comfortable, and therefore many choose to wear this type of clothing even if they are not practicing yoga. Yoga pants are great to sleep in and for lounging around the house. Tops can be worn with pants and a blazer to work or with jeans for a night on the town. Some women’s yoga shirts are even convertible, changing from a tank to a hater or a single shoulder top with a simple twist of the straps.
